  • Sandman: Overture by Neil Gaiman

Overture tells the tale of the great cosmic event that weakened Dream of the Endless enough so that he was susceptible to capture by simple hedge magic in Sleep of the Just. When Morpheus made his original appearance in the first issue of Sandman, Gaiman alluded to some fantastical conflict that left the Lord of Dreams weakened and vulnerable. The series never explained what that conflict entailed, only that it left him weak and vulnerable. In The Sandman: Overture, Gaiman elected to explore the events which led up to the original series. Originally intended to run bi-monthly, with its first issue published in October 2013. However, The Sandman: Overture was plagued by delays, and the final issue did not come out until 2015.

Once, when Thor's hammer is stolen, Thor must disguise himself as a woman?difficult with his beard and huge appetite to steal it back. More poignant is the tale in which the blood of Kvasir, the most sagacious of gods, is turned into a mead that infuses drinkers with poetry. The work culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and rebirth of a new time and people.Through Gaiman's deft and witty prose emerge these gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.
